Business case

Following the launch of the Edelw’ice website, Monica, understanding the needs of the market, proposes to develop an e-commerce service.

Heidi is not convinced by the idea because she is not sure it fits in with Edelw’ice’s current strategy, and the website has just been launched, so it seems too difficult to manage.

To convince Heidi that her project is viable, Monica decides to create a business case.

The business case will enable her to define the need, determine the expected results, evaluate her alternatives in order to propose the best possible solution. The case should answer the questions: Why, Whom, How, Where and What?

To do this Monica will need to create a detailed financial analysis assessing the costs and benefits of the project.

Once this first analysis is done, Monica creates her business plan by going through the following 4 steps:

  • A research phase to gather all relevant information such as the target market, competitors and potential alternatives.
  • A second phase of Benchmarking which focuses on evaluating the service against other approaches.
  • A phase three compilation where Monica will clearly identify the goals and vision of her project
  • Finally, she will document all her findings to make a clear case for Heidi.

Monica presents the business case to Heidi and the rest of the team, who quickly understand the opportunity and the strategy Monica has developed.

Heidi notes that the management structure of the company will need to be adapted, fortunately this is all explained in the business case.

A few months later Edelw’ice celebrates the launch of its new e-commerce service!
